The Weekly Check In - with Kate Bingaman-Burt

(Part of The Weekly Check In series)

I met Kate through her site, Obsessive Consumption back when I was living in Boston, maybe even Kansas. I’ve since just kept in touch, ran into her in New York, and followed everything she’s done. She’s always busy making something, so see if you can keep up. (and she has a really long name.)

Visit: http://obsessiveconsumption.com where you can see everything she does daily.

RR: What are you currently working on or just finished that you’re excited about?

Kate: Hey! I just finished a bunch of handlettering for the book Handmade Nation (coming out soon from Princeton Architectural Press) and I CANNOT wait for summer so I can start experimenting on some of the ideas that I have been collecting this semester (BIGGER work, LOTS of color, NEW website). I have also been doing freelance work for Madewell (new J.Crew owned boutiques)…drawing Madewell receipts, tote bags, tissue paper etc. Here’s a link to a new color purchase drawing.

RR: Where have you traveled so far this month?

Kate: I just got back from Athens, Georgia where I was a visiting artist. I conducted a zine workshop with a bunch of kids and met with graduate students AND gave a lecture. It was a blast! I am heading to Springfield, Missouri in a week to do it all over again at Missouri State. Here’s a link to the Zine Workshop photoset.

RR: What’s your favorite music right now?

Kate: The Dodos and Okkervil River. I saw Okkervil River in Athens while I was there. So not only am I listening to their new CD a lot but I am listening to Black Sheep Boy over and over again as well.

RR: Best food you’ve had in your neighborhood lately or while you were traveling?

Kate: The Grit in Athens, GA! I had an amazing grilled cheese sandwich! Oh and I had two tofu burritos that kicked my ass as well but I forget where I got them from. My favorite neighborhood food is a BLT with White Bean Ragu at Bin612 in Starkville, Mississippi.

RR: Anything Else You Want To Mention?

Kate: My husband (http://www.publicdesigncenter.org) and I are moving to Portland, Oregon at the end of July. I am going to be the new assistant professor of Graphic Design at Portland State and he will be working to find a new home for The Public Design Center. Adventure!

Poopbags.com - Biodegradable 100% Compostable Bags

If you buy plastic bags to pick up your dogs poop when you walk it or scoop your cat litter into plastic bags (from the grocery store) then you should order some Biobags from Poopbags.com. They offer them in large quantaties at great prices. Also an easy website name to remember.

http://poopbags.com

Info on BioBags: (visit their website for more.)

BioBag is the world’s largest brand of 100% biodegradable and 100% compostable bags and films made from the material, Mater-Bi. All of our products contain GMO free starch, biodegradable polymer and other renewable resources. No polyethylene is used in the production process.

Biobags also offer Cat pan litters, kitchen trash bags, and more.

UPDATE: I would suggest for the CAT owners out there to get the JUMBO sized poopbags, as they are better for scooping.

Christiaan Postma - Creations

Amazing wallpaper calendar, see more of his work on his site.

Randall Sellers - Artwork

Randal Sellers - Saw his work at the Richard Heller Gallery this weekend. First time in awhile I was really excited to find a new artist. I was blow away by the detail and how small it was. Unless you see it in real life I don’t think you can know how it feels to see it. So if you’re in Los Angeles, go see it while it’s up.
